Apple’s iPhone, Nokia’s Touch, Samsung’s F700, and HTC’s Touch all of these feature touch interfaces of some kind, but whats the difference?

Apple iPhone

The iPhone has a multi-touch display, this means it recognizes multiple inputs i.e. more than one finger, so intuitive and fun gestures can be used on screen to interact rather than the normal buttons you might expect.

iPhone uses an accelerometer to detect the rotation of the phone, that coupled with the pinch gesture, tap, flick and double tap combine to produce a rich and tactile interface which is very natural and easy to use.

Nokia S60 Touch

The touch has a far more standard GUI it uses buttons far more, and there are no gesture based inputs shown in the inital unveiling video, which to me suggests this device is not particularly revolutionary.

That said it is more open software wise than the iPhone and it has some kind of feedback system built in so you know when your pressing buttons, however it uses a stylus, I assume as an option rather than a requirement, however little is known about the S60 but so far it seems like a gimmick, the large display is more like that of the old Sony Ericcson P990i than that of the iPhone.

Samsung F700

This phone out does the iPhone in almost every way, I have yet to see or use one but if the device has the same gesture based multi-touch interface it will be a strong competitor to the iPhone, as yet the phone it not released, when it does become available I would like to have a play, to see how its interface compares to the others. On paper its a very good phone but its samsung and I have a strong dislike for samsung phones, mainly because of their bad interface and build quality, we shall see what happens when it is released.

HTC Touch

This is the HTC Touch a windows mobile based device with a touch screen which is also sensitive to a stylus, however in use it seems very well built and designed, it has a kind of gesture based interface although when I used it the interface did feel clunky, unresponsive and in need of quite a hard press to operate, the device defiantly works better with the stylus which is a shame because although perhaps not better than the other phones in some respects it is very flexible because of its windows core which would allow for it to have additional applications loaded.

LG Prada

The prada phone really was the first generation of true touch screen phones, every one knows there have been devices like the XDA from o2 and the P900s from Sony Ericson however this really was a good device, although technically limited as it is at heart a normal phone with a touch sensitive GUI rather than a gesture based device it has paved the way for these new devices.

LG Viewty

New from LG is the Viewty which is the latest attempt by LG to produce a touch screen phone, again I have not tried this but from reviews and videos I think it is a massive improvement on the Prada and I am glad they dropped that name because I doubt it appealed to many men with that stigma attached. The device is very impressive although again no multi-touch gestures which is some thing I really would like to see it does feature some of the elements of the Microsoft Surface, the photos for one fall down onto a light box which you can rearrange by dragging which is a nice feature although on such a small display I am not sure it really matters. All said and done its a good phone but I would like to see it do more.

Sony Ericsson P1i

The P1i seems to me to be just another iteration of the P800, P900, or P990i it has the same poor interface, and small screen so it really isnt up to the job that these other devices offer, it really seems like a dud as no one is likely to want the P1i is going to buy it as there are plenty of other devices like the blackberry which have more to offer in a easier to use package.

Summary
To summarize I would say that the iPhone is the best which is why I bought it, the device has its limitations for sure, but its the way things work on the device which I love, its so intuitive, and natural to use. With a flick, pinch or tap I can do any thing and to me that is simplicity, in terms of the future, I can see technology like this becoming our new way of interacting with the computer, gesture based interfaces have been around for a while but it takes time for the average person to learn a new input system, so Apple has made a smart move by creating a phone and an iPod which has some of the basic gestures, in the future, perhaps we will see more gestures, a circular motion may rotate an image, or dragging a window down will make it minimize. Only time will tell how these companies will develop gestures and touch interfaces, but I am very confident that this is where the market will be going in the next 5 years, buttons are out and touch screen is in.
