Phone interface

October 11th, 2008 by Tom

The phone interface is a complex area because its the remote and has a large touch screen display its possible to confuse people by having them switch their vision back and forth between the phone and the TV interface, so most of the time it will act as a touch pad like on a laptop but other times it will become the interface, such as for adjusting sliders, entering text, and such like. Below is an example of how the filters will work when faced with a large display full of videos and you need to narrow them down, simply perform a pinch gesture with two fingers far apart moving inward to the center of the display and the interface for filtering video appears.

This is an example of the on screen interface full of videos, in this case on the recommendation screen, the wondering camera tries to suggest you can move the camera around by dragging your finger across the display of your phone remote.

UPDATE: I have adjusted the video (see new one below…) because the family guy video at 4:3 was not looking good with its semi transparent background and it was suggested by Mike that I make it better, after experimenting it looks much better now.

Contract Law

October 10th, 2008 by Tom

A contract is an agreement or set of agreements between two parties, which is necessary to ensure legal protection for both parties when they wish to do business. This is to ensure that if one party breaks their agreement there is a way for the other party to bring the matter to court and enforce the agreement, where it may be possible to sue for damages.

When a designer enters a contract with a client they are selling the rights to that work, the rights would normally be defined in the contract for example the following may be used to describe the rights which they are being given to your work…

Duration – How long the rights to use the work are in affect for.

Exclusivity – Whether the designer can license the rights to the work to another party or not.

Medium – In which way may the work be used by the client(internet, print, telephone, etc…)

Geographic – Where may the work be used, is it international, European, or specific to a country?

Addition / Version rights – May the client or another party working for the client make additions or versions of the work produced by your self.

The designer may need the client to supply certain materials in order to complete the work, so a materials section can be inserted specifying when, what and how the materials be provided.

The client and designer should also specify a production schedule, with dates for each milestone of the project. These milestones can then be given amounts and deadlines for completion so the designer receives payment in smaller amounts to ensure they get paid in the event of cancellation.

Additionally it is best to define how long the client has to pay, normally this is a 30 day window from when the milestone is delivered and accepted by the client. After this the designer can also specify a percentage of interest which the owed amount can accrue over time.

If the contract is broken or mutually cancelled the designer should ensure they are adequately protected. Normally the contract should specify that if the client cancels the designer will keep all payment so far plus an additional percentage amount which may vary depending on how near to completion the work is.

The designer may wish to add additional clauses such as client alteration fees if they make unreasonable demands on the number of alterations they wish to make. This may specify 3 changes and then they pay an agreed amount per hour / change there after.

Also if the designer has produced boards or other materials they wish to have returned at the they should specify that original artwork be returned by a set date, or period after the work has been accepted as complete. Also a designer may wish to have a clause for expenses which would require the client to pay any defined expenses in addition to the agreed compensation for the work done.

Contract law is complicated so it can be best to have a legal advisor read a contract before you sign it, and it is negotiable, so you could go back to a client and ask for changes to be made.

Sony Hub

October 5th, 2008 by Tom

I have looked at various names in my sketchbook and I think hub has the most potential as the name is self explanatory, short and memorable. It also has a nice shape which I intend to explore, these are some digitization’s of my sketchbook ideas.

Zattoo

September 28th, 2008 by Tom

Zattoo is a free application for Windows, Mac and Linux, which allows you to watch live TV on selected channels from your country. At present in the UK you can receive….

  • BBC One
  • BBC Two
  • BBC Three
  • BBC Four
  • CBBC
  • Cbeebies
  • ITV 1
  • Channel 4
  • Five
  • Other random channels….
It is not the best quality and you probably still need a TV licence, however it allows you to watch TV anywhere with a high speed internet connection with a simple EPG and a poor GUI its no Freeview box but its good enough for occasional watching!

Ideas

September 28th, 2008 by Tom

I have several ideas on the go, some go together well. One does not…

+ Sliders on screen will allow users to generate their own TV show by adjusting the attributes or DNA you get your own user generated show. It would be rendered using modern 3D graphics and programmatic music. The best combinations could be shared with friends and you could steam it to your mobile over the internet from your TV.

It would be adjustable throughout so if you want more drama in one episode you just adjust it. You can make the should longer for those Sunday evenings and shorter for the train to work.

+ Your mobile phone becomes your virtual identity to an online subscription and store of your TV viewing information. The information us used to generate recommendations highest to lowest. Then when you enter range of your TV it knows who you are and presents your recommendations onscreen to help you fond shows to stream on demand.

If a friend or family member enters range as well the TV will adjust the recommendations to recommend what the group will find most intersting. This will enhance group viewing as the list of shows will be talored to everyones interests. This would be popular according to my research.

+ The last idea goes further to say that the phone allows your TV to follow you as a personal speaker when your out f range of the TV or routing sound to your home hifi or other TVs around the home. If you enter range of a TV already in use then it will show both users the option to pause the current content and go over to the new users content. Alternativly it could allow the TV to automatically pause when you are the last person to leave.

+ While watching TV you hit the star on your phone or remote and the current show is bookmarked with your current location so you and your friends can stream the whole show or just from a few moments before your current time so they can rewatch the best bit. Those without subscription could pay for a one off show or stream 15 seconds either side of the bookmark time code as a method to boost interest and sales of the show. Whether they have a Sony TV or not as it could email you the bookmark.
